Barefoot Beach-2 The annual rankings of U.S. beaches by a Florida International University professor and coastal expert have been released and Barefoot Beach in Collier County has been named the second best beach in the nation, finishing just behind Hawaii’s Waimanalo Bay Beach Park.

Stephen P. Leatherman, known as Dr. Beach, also named Collier County’s Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park beach the ninth best in the country. Leatherman bases his rankings on 50 criteria, including water and sand quality. He’s recently started including beach safety, environmental management and bonus points for no-smoking policies.

There were two other Florida beaches in the top ten, St. George Island State Park and Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne.
