RealtyTrac, an Irvine California based company that compiles statistics and follows foreclosure filings, has released the January numbers for Southwest Florida. In Lee County, default notices, auction notices and bank repossessions of homes totaled 854 in the first month of 2011. This is down 35% from December’s 1,322 filings and off significantly from January 2010 when there were 3,022 foreclosure related cases. In Collier County, there were 271 filings in January, down from 437 in December and off a staggering 72% year over year when January 2010 saw 989 lender actions against homeowners. These statistics come in the wake of a foreclosure freeze instituted in September of last year when financial institutions were questioned about fraudulent documents. Several large banks voluntarily stopped foreclosure actions to investigate their procedures and paperwork used to take back homes. Foreclosure actions resumed in early December, but at a much slower pace.
